At Best Brains Cary, we see this pattern constantly. The students who thrive long-term in math aren't necessarily the fastest at recalling formulas. They're the ones who've developed critical thinking — the ability to reason through something new, not just repeat something familiar.
The Formula Trap
Formulas are useful. But a student who only knows the formula is one unfamiliar word problem away from feeling completely lost. Formulas answer "what do I do?" Critical thinking answers "why does this work, and what do I do when the question changes?"
That second question is the one that actually predicts long-term math success — especially as Cary students move from elementary arithmetic into the more abstract, multi-step reasoning required in middle school pre-algebra and beyond.
Four Habits We Build Into Every Cary Classroom
Reasoning out loud. Our instructors regularly ask students to explain their thinking, not just their answer. A correct answer with no reasoning behind it is a fragile skill; a clearly explained answer is a transferable one.
Breaking problems into parts. Complex or multi-step problems feel overwhelming until a student learns to chunk them. We teach Cary students to identify the smaller questions hidden inside a bigger one — a skill that shows up directly on EOG-style assessments.
Testing more than one method. There's often more than one legitimate way to reach a math answer. Letting students explore multiple approaches — instead of drilling a single method — builds flexible thinkers, not rigid rule-followers.
Getting comfortable being wrong first. The students who improve fastest are usually the ones who've stopped being afraid of an incorrect first attempt. Productive struggle, guided by the right instructor feedback, is where real math confidence gets built.
It's Not Just the Math Program
Critical thinking isn't isolated to a single subject. At our Cary center, programs like Abacus and Coding reinforce the exact same underlying skill — structured, sequential reasoning — from a different angle. A student practicing logical sequencing in Coding is quietly strengthening the same mental muscle they'll use to work through a multi-step math word problem.
That's by design. Skills that transfer across subjects stick far better than skills drilled in isolation.
The Middle School Wall
Many Cary parents notice the same thing around 6th or 7th grade: a student who was previously "good at math" suddenly starts struggling. It's rarely a sudden drop in ability. It's usually the point where math shifts from computation to reasoning — and a student who was relying on memorization hits a wall that critical thinking would have prevented.
The earlier that reasoning skill gets built, the less jarring that transition becomes.
