Back to School Check-In: 5 Signs Your Child May Need Extra Academic Support
The first few weeks of a new school year are exciting, but they can also reveal areas where a child may need a little extra support.
By now, students are beginning to settle into their routines, receive homework, and adjust to new teachers and expectations. This is a great time for parents to check in and see how their child is feeling academically.
Here are five signs to watch for:
1. Homework Is Taking Much Longer Than Expected
Some homework challenges are normal at the beginning of the school year. However, if your child is consistently spending a long time completing assignments or becoming frustrated with concepts they previously understood, there may be gaps that need additional practice.
2. Your Child Is Losing Confidence
Statements like “I’m not good at math” or “Reading is too hard” can be important signals.
Children sometimes begin avoiding a subject when they don't feel confident in their skills. Encouragement, practice, and instruction at the right level can help rebuild that confidence.
3. Previous Concepts Have Been Forgotten
After summer break, it is normal for students to need some review.
Math facts, fractions, multiplication, grammar rules, vocabulary, and reading comprehension skills may feel a little rusty. Strengthening these foundational skills early can make new classroom concepts easier to understand.
4. Reading or Word Problems Feel Difficult
Sometimes a student understands the math calculation but struggles to understand what a word problem is asking. Similarly, a child may be able to read a passage but have difficulty explaining its meaning or answering comprehension questions.
Strong reading comprehension supports learning across Math, Science, English, and many other subjects.
5. Your Child Needs More Challenge
Academic support isn't only for students who are struggling.
Some children understand classroom material quickly and are ready to move ahead. Additional enrichment in Math, English, Abacus, or Coding can keep them challenged, curious, and excited about learning.
Start the School Year Strong
The beginning of the school year is one of the best times to identify strengths as well as areas that may need improvement. Addressing small learning gaps now can help prevent them from becoming bigger challenges later in the year.
At Best Brains Bee Cave, we work with students to strengthen academic foundations, build confidence, and develop independent learning skills through structured programs in Math, English, Abacus, and Coding.
If you're wondering where your child currently stands, an academic assessment can help identify their strengths and areas where additional support may be beneficial.
