Parenting - Back to School Tips

Aug 01, 2019

We hope you had a great summer and made memories with your friends and families. With the new school year quickly approaching, we wanted to share some useful tips to make the upcoming year a fun and successful year for you and your family.

Start fresh!

It’s always nice to have a new journal to keep track of all your thoughts, ideas, schedules and updates. The pages are ready for your creativity and inspiration. Even in the age of “digital this, digital that,” there is no substituting the feeling of expressing yourself with a journal.

Talk with your child

Every school year brings new change in your child’s life. A new teacher. A new school. A new locker. Make your child comfortable and ready for change. Have a conversation with your child about the upcoming school year. The biggest success is not actually what your child expresses, it’s the bond you’re creating with your child by engaging in a discussion. “What are you looking forward to?” Continue to engage in a dialogue and focus on asking questions you or your child typically don’t ask. If you haven’t tried this before, give it a shot. You will be surprised by the responses your child will give you.

Set some goals

You might think that your child is going to school to learn new things and will have all the fun. The reality is that each school year is another opportunity for parents to learn new skills and grow. Write down 5 goals you would like to achieve this year. Maybe you want to be more organized. Maybe you want to try yoga. Maybe you want to volunteer at school. Feel free to open yourself to new experiences!

Support System

The moment we think we have everything under control, we are presented with new obstacles and challenges. Surround yourself with a support system that you trust. They should be people you can have open, honest conversations with while supporting you emotionally. Our closest circle people may not always provide the support needed. Support people can be friends, families, professionals, books and/or meditation. Life happens and always throws us a curveball. In these moments, it always helps to seek assistance and advice from your support network.

Have fun!

Everyone remembers the feeling of shopping for “back to school” outfits and school supplies! Make the new school year a fun celebration! Take your child out to eat or take them to a movie to celebrate the new school year. Tell your child that you’re proud of them and excited to see how they will grow during this school year.

Rejuvenate

Most importantly, don’t forget to spoil yourself too! Reward yourself for making it through the summer with a new outfit, a trip to the salon, night out, movie, coffee with a friend, or just alone time for meditation.

Please let us know if you have other tips that will help parents and families. We believe in sharing great advice and helping others. We wish you and your family a great start to the school year. Send us some pictures of your summer fun and happy smiles!! We would like to include them on the Best Brains of Algonquin website and/or social media.
